Abstract

Hotels, as part of the tourism and hospitality industry, have significant environmental impacts due to high energy and water consumption and waste generation. The United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, with its 17 SDGs, highlights the need for sustainability. In 2020, the International Tourism Partnership identified four key goals: youth employment, water-use efficiency, carbon emission reduction, and human rights. The 2022 Hospitality Sustainability Framework stresses assessing hotel sustainability across economic, social, and environmental dimensions. The European Commission's 2015 report emphasized the role of the circular economy in achieving sustainability, with the 9R framework outlining ten business strategies. While much literature focuses on manufacturing and construction, service industries like hospitality are often overlooked. Thus, applying the 9R framework to the hospitality industry is crucial, but sustainability in this sector has unique characteristics. Furthermore, implementing a circular economy requires exploring new digital technologies. This article addresses gaps in the literature by discussing sustainable performance development, the need for a circular economy, and digital technology adoption in the hospitality sector.
